Why Hitting Rock Bottom is Actually a Good Thing

Have you hit rock bottom?

If you’re feeling burnt out, frustrated and exhausted, there is a good chance you might have hit a low point. Quite possibly one of your lowest points! Whether you’ve recently been let go, a relationship has ended or you’ve experienced an unimaginable loss, many devastating experiences can result in you feeling as though you have hit rock bottom.

With the right approach, mindset and support team, you can most definitely find ways to get right back up after being knocked down. Let’s take a look at how hitting rock bottom can actually be a good thing, shall we?

What is Considered “Rock Bottom”

Let’s begin by taking a closer look at what rock bottom is.

Rock bottom can look different from one person to another. But ultimately it refers to a state where you feel at your absolute lowest. The feeling of rock bottom is often due to a major life experience that has resulted in feelings of pain, grief or stress.

One person may feel as though they have hit rock bottom after being let go from their place or work, while others may experience these feelings of despair following a break-up or divorce. Often what I do notice is that many claim they have hit rock bottom when a series of negative events have occurred, such as losing a person or pet in the same week that they have received bad news about their own health.

While rock bottom can look and feel different for everyone, how you respond is completely up to you.

Why is Rock Bottom a Good Thing?

While the feeling of hitting rock bottom can undoubtedly be excruciating at best, there is an upside to this experience.

As the saying goes, it’s only up from here! Hitting rock bottom can provide you with the opportunity to really analyze your life and determine what you want moving forward. You can set goals for yourself, create a strategic plan to achieve them and take the first step.

Many often say that if they hadn’t hit rock bottom, they wouldn’t have known that they needed to make a change or taken the first step towards a brighter future.

Getting Back on Track

How you respond to hitting rock bottom and get back on track is completely up to you.

Here are some of my best tips and tricks to help you get back on track after a negative life experience that has left you not feeling your best.

Set Goals

The first step toward a brighter future is determining what needs to change. Setting goals can be a really positive way of implementing change in your life, one that is easy to track and work towards.

Make a Plan

Once you have set a goal or series of goals, it’s time to make a plan. Creating a plan can help you to better keep track of your goals, hold yourself accountable and check in regularly on progress. If you aren’t quite making the progress that you would have liked, you can adjust your plan accordingly and easily.

Communicate with Loved Ones

Speaking with family and friends might be just what you need. Your loved ones can act as a sounding board, providing you with someone to talk to as you plan for and work towards success. They may even be able to provide you with a little feedback, words of encouragement or help along the way!

Find an Executive Coach

While your family and friends can provide support throughout your journey of self improvement, there are things that only a private or executive coach can provide!

With years of experience, informative resources and the right approach, an executive coach can provide you with guidance and knowledge every step of the way. They can meet with you regularly to discuss any struggles that you may be facing and create a strategic plan to overcome each and every one.

At the end of the day, your coach will always have your best interest in mind.

Make Healthy Choices

No matter your struggles, goals or lifestyle, making healthy choices is something that we can all benefit from. By fueling your body with nutritious foods, drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep, and reducing feelings of stress, you can live a much healthier and happier lifestyle.

These healthy choices can affect far more than just your physical health. They can provide you with more energy, improve your mood and even boost your confidence. All of these things, in turn, can help you along the way in your self improvement journey.

Adjust Your Environment

Does your environment set you up for success?

If your cupboards are stocked with unhealthy foods, your house is full of clutter or the people in your life aren’t providing you with support, you may need to make some changes to the things that surround you.

When your environment is complementary to the life you want to live, you’re much more likely to make the lasting changes needed for self improvement and then stick with them, for good.

The Benefits of Working with an Executive Coach

Is it time to make a lasting change in your life? If you’ve hit rock bottom and want to take the necessary steps toward self improvement, an executive coach can help.
